Notification batching is the practice of aggregating notifications and delivering them at scheduled intervals rather than in real time. It is a design intervention against the interruption infrastructure of the attention economy: instead of allowing each notification to break sustained focus immediately, batching creates protected intervals during which attention can remain undisturbed.

The principle is simple but its implementation is contested. Proponents argue that batching preserves cognitive resources by reducing task-switching cost and attention residue. Critics argue that batched notifications create anxiety — the anticipation of the next batch — and that some communications genuinely require immediate attention. The resolution depends on context: medical alerts, safety notifications, and time-sensitive coordination may warrant immediate delivery, while social media updates, promotional emails, and non-urgent messages do not.

Notification batching is one of the few attention commons interventions that operates at the level of design rather than individual discipline. A user who must manually resist notifications faces the willpower cost of repeated self-regulation. A system that batches by default removes the decision from the user's hands, protecting attention without requiring constant vigilance.

Notification batching is not a feature. It is a claim about who owns attention — the platform that sends the notification, or the human who receives it. Batching is the design assertion that the receiver owns their attention, and that the platform's claim is valid only at the receiver's chosen intervals.
