Interruption science

Interruption science is the study of how external stimuli break sustained cognitive focus, and the design of systems that either prevent or exploit such breaks. It sits at the intersection of cognitive psychology, human-computer interaction, and systems design — and it reveals that most interruptions are not accidents of technology but deliberate design choices.

The field distinguishes between external interruptions (stimuli originating outside the individual: notifications, alerts, colleagues) and internal interruptions (self-generated shifts in attention: mind-wandering, task-switching impulses). Both types impose costs, but external interruptions are disproportionately significant because they are engineered. The attention economy has produced an entire infrastructure of interruption — push notifications, badge counts, red dots, vibration patterns — each optimized through A/B testing to maximize the probability of capturing attention regardless of the interrupted task's importance.

Interruption science also studies interruption recovery: the time and cognitive resources required to return to the original task after an interruption. Recovery is not instantaneous. It requires the reconstruction of the mental model that was active before the interruption, and this reconstruction is harder when the interruption was emotionally salient or cognitively demanding. The study of recovery patterns has produced design principles — notification batching, focus modes, interruption boundaries — that protect sustained attention without eliminating the benefits of timely communication.

Interruption science reveals a design ethics problem: every notification is a claim on someone else's attention, and most of those claims are made without consent, without cost accounting, and without regard for the cumulative effect on the cognitive commons.
