Attention residue

Attention residue is the cognitive carryover that persists after an interruption has ended — the portion of attention that remains occupied by the interrupting task or stimulus even after the individual has returned to the original task. Unlike the immediate time cost of an interruption, which is visible and measurable, attention residue is invisible, cumulative, and degrades the quality of sustained cognitive work without the individual's awareness.

The concept was formalized by organizational behavior researcher Sophie Leroy in 2009, who demonstrated that interruptions do not merely delay task completion but degrade the quality of the work performed after the interruption. When a worker switches from Task A to Task B — even briefly — a portion of their cognitive resources remains occupied by Task A. This residual cognitive load reduces the capacity available for Task B and persists until Task A is either completed or cognitively closed. The effect is particularly pronounced when Task A is unfinished: the Zeigarnik effect ensures that incomplete tasks maintain a hold on working memory, making attention residue more persistent and more costly.

In the context of the attention commons, attention residue is the hidden cost of the interruption infrastructure that dominates digital platforms. A notification that takes two seconds to dismiss may produce attention residue that persists for minutes or hours. The cumulative effect of dozens of daily interruptions is not merely lost time but degraded cognitive capacity — a depletion of the attention commons that is invisible to the individual and unmeasured by platform analytics.

The measurement of attention residue is difficult because it requires assessing the quality of attention rather than merely its duration. Self-report measures are unreliable because individuals are typically unaware of their own attention residue. Experimental measures — such as task-switching paradigms, error rates on secondary tasks, and pupillometry — provide indirect evidence but are costly and invasive. The invisibility of attention residue is one reason it is so poorly governed: what cannot be measured is difficult to regulate, and what is difficult to regulate is freely exploited.

Attention residue connects to broader frameworks of cognitive load theory and context switching. In cognitive load theory, attention residue represents extraneous load that is not attributable to the task at hand but to prior interruptions. In the study of context switching, attention residue is the mechanism by which switching costs accumulate beyond the immediate transition period. The management of attention residue — through interruption boundaries, notification batching, and deliberate closure rituals — is a key practice for preserving both individual productivity and the collective attention commons.
