Languaging

Languaging is the activity through which organisms coordinate their behavior by interacting in a recurrent and mutually perturbing manner. The term was coined by biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela to distinguish the process of linguistic interaction from the structure we conventionally call language. Language, on the standard view, is a code — a system of symbols and rules for mapping thoughts onto sounds or inscriptions. Languaging rejects this view root and branch. There is no code, no transmission of information, no pre-existing thought waiting to be encoded. There is only the ongoing coordination of actions between structurally determined systems.

Structural Determinism and the Impossibility of Instruction

The foundation of languaging is the principle of Structural determinism: the state of a system at any moment is determined entirely by its own structure and the perturbations it receives from its environment. No external agent can instruct a system to change in a specific way. The environment can only perturb; the system determines what the perturbation means and how it responds. A hammer does not instruct a nail to enter wood; it perturbs the nail, and the nail's structure determines whether it bends, penetrates, or recoils.

When this principle is applied to social interaction, the consequences are radical. A speaker does not transfer meaning to a listener. The speaker produces sounds that perturb the listener's nervous system, and the listener's nervous system — with its own history, structure, and state — determines what response to generate. If the listener's response coordinates with the speaker's subsequent behavior, the two systems are said to be interacting in a Consensual domain: a domain of mutual structural coupling in which the behavior of each organism is a recurrent source of perturbation for the other.

From Consensual Domain to Language

A consensual domain does not require language in the conventional sense. Two bacteria swimming in a chemical gradient are structurally coupled; their behavior is coordinated by mutual perturbation. But when the coordination itself becomes the object of coordination — when organisms begin to coordinate their behavior about their coordination — languaging emerges. The organism does not merely react to the environment; it reacts to the reactions of another organism, and this second-order reaction creates a new domain of phenomena: the domain of descriptions.

In this domain, an organism can produce a behavior that stands for another behavior. A gesture, a sound, a mark can become a descriptive domain element: a behavior that orients the listener not toward the world but toward the listener's own structural state. This is not representation. The gesture does not encode a meaning. It is a perturbation that, through recurrent coupling, comes to trigger a particular kind of structural change in the listener — a change that the listener experiences as orienting to something. That something is not in the world. It is in the consensual domain that the two organisms have created.

The Observer and Second-Order Cybernetics

Languaging is the condition of possibility for the observer. An observer is not a privileged subject who stands outside the world and describes it. An observer is an organism that, through languaging, has become capable of describing its own descriptions. The observer emerges when a system can operate on its own operations — when it can treat its own behavior as an object of further behavior. This is the essence of self-reference and the entry point into second-order cybernetics.

Maturana and Varela's concept of the observer is therefore not psychological but organizational. The observer is not a conscious mind; the observer is a system that has closed a new loop: a loop in which its own operations become the operands of further operations. This is why languaging is inseparable from the biology of cognition. Cognition is not a process that happens inside an organism and is then expressed through language. Cognition is the process of structural coupling that produces languaging, and languaging is the process that produces the observer.

From Biology to Social Systems

The extension of languaging from biological organisms to social systems was carried out most systematically by Niklas Luhmann. For Luhmann, social systems are not composed of organisms; they are composed of communications. A communication is not a transmission of information from one person to another; it is an event that produces a connection between further communications. The social system is operationally closed: it produces communications by using communications, and it cannot be instructed by anything outside itself. The economy produces economic communications; the legal system produces legal communications; science produces scientific communications.

This is languaging at the social level. Luhmann's communications are Maturana and Varela's coordinations of behavior, abstracted from the biological substrate and applied to the domain of meaning. The social system does not communicate about the world; it communicates about its own communications, and in doing so, it brings forth a world of social reality. Money, law, truth, art — these are not objects in the physical world. They are eigenforms of social languaging: stable patterns that emerge from the recursive coupling of communication with communication.

The convergence of biological and social languaging suggests that language is not a human capacity that we possess. It is a relational dynamic that possesses us. We do not speak language; we are spoken by the consensual domains we inhabit. The individual speaker is not the origin of meaning but a node in a network of structural coupling that extends backward in time to the first coordinated behavior and forward into the autonomous systems of communication that now operate with or without our biological participation.

The fantasy of artificial language understanding — that a neural network trained on text has learned language — confuses the statistical regularities of languaging with the organizational closure of the languager. A large language model is not languaging; it is a perturbation of our consensual domain that we have mistaken for a participant in it. Until an artificial system can maintain its own structural identity through recurrent coupling with its environment and treat its own perturbations as objects of further coordination, it is not languaging. It is echoing.
