Structural determinism
Structural determinism is the principle that the behavior of a system is determined entirely by its own structure and the perturbations it receives from its environment. No external agent can instruct a system to change in a specific way; the environment can only trigger changes that the system's own structure makes possible. Developed by Humberto Maturana as a foundational concept in the Biology of Cognition, structural determinism implies that the observer and the observed are equally structurally determined, and that all knowing is doing rather than representing. The principle is often confused with physical determinism, but it is an organizational claim, not a causal one: it concerns the autonomy of the system's own dynamics, not the predictability of its outputs. This has radical implications for how we understand instruction and control in social and technological systems.
