Consensual domain
A consensual domain is a domain of mutual structural coupling between two or more organisms whose recurrent interactions produce a coordinated history of perturbations and responses. In a consensual domain, the behavior of each organism becomes a reliable source of perturbation for the others, and the domain itself acquires a stability that none of the individual organisms possesses alone. The concept was developed by Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela to explain how social coordination emerges without instruction, information transmission, or shared internal representations. A consensual domain is not a common understanding but a common history: the organisms have changed together in ways that make their subsequent interactions predictable to each other, even though each organism remains operationally closed and structurally determined. Language, on this account, is not what creates the consensual domain. It is what the consensual domain creates when the coordination of behavior becomes its own object. This distinguishes the consensual domain from the Domain of interactions in first-order cybernetics, where the focus is on input-output relations rather than mutual co-determination.
