Eric Wieschaus

Eric F. Wieschaus (born 1947) is an American developmental biologist who shared the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Edward Lewis for their discoveries concerning the genetic control of early embryonic development. Working in collaboration with Nüsslein-Volhard, Wieschaus conducted the saturation mutagenesis screens that produced the first comprehensive map of the genes required to pattern the Drosophila embryo — the work that directly enabled the subsequent identification of the Hox genes and revealed the modular, combinatorial logic of developmental control.

Wieschaus's scientific sensibility has been described as characterized by rigorous attention to developmental mechanism over evolutionary speculation. His post-Nobel work on cellular mechanics — how cells change shape, migrate, and adhere during morphogenesis — extends the genetic analysis of pattern into the physical processes that actually build tissues.
