Edward B. Lewis (1918–2004) was an American geneticist who shared the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Eric Wieschaus for their discoveries concerning the genetic control of early embryonic development. Lewis's work on the bithorax complex in Drosophila revealed that genes are arranged on the chromosome in the same order as the body segments they control — the principle of collinearity that became foundational to understanding how Hox genes sculpt animal body plans. His research transformed embryology from a descriptive science into a genetic one, demonstrating that development is not merely a sequence of morphological changes but a precisely regulated program encoded in the genome.
