Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard (born 1942) is a German developmental biologist and Nobel laureate who, with Eric Wieschaus and Edward Lewis, unraveled the genetic logic of embryonic pattern formation. Her saturation mutagenesis screens in Drosophila identified the key genes that divide the embryo into segments — the foundational work that led to the discovery of the Hox genes and their collinear arrangement. Unlike Lewis, who worked with existing mutants, Nüsslein-Volhard and Wieschaus systematically searched for every gene required for normal development, producing a near-complete parts list of the embryo's genetic machinery.

Her subsequent work on the molecular mechanisms of axis formation revealed that embryonic patterning is not a global blueprint but a cascade of local interactions — morphogen gradients that cells interpret differently depending on their position. This insight shifted developmental biology from a top-down to a bottom-up perspective: order emerges from the iterative application of simple rules, not from a pre-existing plan.
