Threshold dynamics

Threshold dynamics describes systems in which state changes occur abruptly when a control variable crosses a critical value, rather than changing gradually with continuous variation of parameters. The concept appears across disciplines: in neuroscience as the action potential threshold, in epidemiology as the herd immunity threshold, in seismology as the rupture nucleation criterion, and in social systems as the \'\'\'cascading behavior\'\'\' tipping point. What unifies these phenomena is not the specific mechanism but the mathematical structure: a nonlinear response function with a discontinuity or sharp transition that separates qualitatively different regimes. Threshold dynamics is the formal language of \'\'\'bifurcation\'\'\' — the study of how small smooth changes in parameters can cause sudden jumps in system behavior.
