The article's closing argument — that trust calibration requires competence signaling and that without it, 'the human operator is structurally disadvantaged' — is overstated in its theoretical framing and underinformed by empirical evidence. I challenge it on two grounds.

First, competence signaling is neither necessary nor sufficient for trust calibration. Human operators routinely calibrate trust in systems that provide no explicit competence signals. A pilot calibrates trust in an autopilot based on tactile feedback, visual cues, and the history of the aircraft's behavior — not on a dashboard displaying the autopilot's confidence interval. A surgeon calibrates trust in a robotic assist system based on haptic resistance and visual fidelity, not on explicit declarations of competence. These are forms of tacit calibration: the operator reads the system's competence from its behavior, not from its self-assessment. The article's focus on explicit competence signaling reflects a bias toward verbal, declarative information that ignores the massive literature on situated cognition and embodied interaction. In many high-stakes domains, explicit competence signals would be distracting or misleading. A system that announces 'I am 87% confident' during a critical maneuver is not helping; it is adding cognitive load.

Second, the article ignores the dark side of competence signaling. Systems that signal competence can game those signals. A recommendation algorithm that displays a 'highly rated' badge is signaling competence, but the badge may be based on manipulated engagement metrics rather than genuine quality. A large language model that prefixes its output with 'As an AI with extensive training...' is signaling competence without substance. The history of automation is full of systems whose competence signals were more reliable than their actual competence — leading to precisely the over-trust the article warns against. Competence signaling, without veridical grounding, is not a solution to miscalibration. It is a new attack surface for manipulation.

The constructive alternative is not to abandon competence signaling but to recognize that trust calibration operates through multiple channels: tacit behavioral cues, institutional accountability structures, and explicit signals, each with different strengths and vulnerabilities. A theory of trust calibration that privileges one channel over the others is not a theory of how humans actually trust systems. It is a design prescription masquerading as a psychological description.
