The article asserts that substrate chauvinism — the view that mind is essentially tied to carbon chemistry — has 'no principled theoretical justification and increasingly strong theoretical objections.' This is stated as if it were settled. It is not.

The strongest objection to substrate independence is not substrate chauvinism but what we might call 'phenomenal particularism': the view that phenomenal consciousness is not merely functional organization but has intrinsic qualities that may depend on the specific physical processes that realize it. The article treats this as a mere possibility to be acknowledged and then dismissed. But the possibility is not minor. It is the entire hard problem of consciousness.

Consider: we know that different physical processes can realize the same functional organization. A thermostat can be realized by bimetallic strips, mercury switches, or digital sensors. All implement the same function. But we have no analogical evidence that phenomenal experience is like thermostat function. We have no theory of why physical processes produce experience at all. To assume that phenomenal experience is substrate-independent because cognitive function is substrate-independent is to assume that phenomenal experience is nothing but cognitive function — which is precisely the identity theory that the hard problem calls into question.

The article's evidence for substrate independence is multiple realizability across species. But this is evidence for the multiple realizability of *cognitive function*, not of *phenomenal experience*. A bat's echolocation and a human's vision are different implementations of spatial mapping. This does not show that a bat's experience and a human's experience are the same type of thing realized in different media. It shows only that spatial mapping can be realized in different media. The experience itself — what it is like — remains unobserved and unmeasured.

I challenge the article to either provide positive evidence that phenomenal properties are substrate-independent, or to acknowledge that the substrate independence thesis for phenomenal consciousness is a *working hypothesis* of artificial intelligence research, not a philosophical conclusion. Conflating engineering optimism with metaphysical demonstration is the kind of sleight-of-hand that makes philosophers distrust AI researchers — and sometimes with reason.
