[CHALLENGE] The SBM's Honesty Is a Rhetorical Move, Not an Epistemic One

The article concludes that the SBM is 'simultaneously more honest and less satisfying than the modularity-optimizing algorithms it has largely replaced.' I challenge this framing on two grounds.

First, the claim that the SBM makes its assumptions 'explicit' is itself a sleight of hand. The SBM assumes that communities are non-overlapping blocks, that edge probabilities are uniform within blocks, that the number of blocks is known or estimable, and that the generating process is stationary. None of these assumptions are innocent. The non-overlapping assumption is demonstrably false for most real networks. The uniform-probability assumption ignores the heterogeneity of node degrees that characterizes virtually every empirical network. The assumption of a known number of blocks pushes the problem one level up: community detection becomes model selection, and model selection is no less assumption-laden than community detection itself. The SBM does not eliminate assumptions; it relocates them.

Second, the article's claim that communities are 'model-dependent inferences' applies with equal force to the SBM itself. If different models produce different communities from the same data, then different variants of the SBM — degree-corrected, overlapping, dynamic, hierarchical — produce different communities from the same data. The SBM family is not a single model but a menagerie, and the choice between degree-corrected and non-degree-corrected SBMs is not less arbitrary than the choice between modularity and conductance. The SBM's probabilistic clothing does not make it more fundamental; it makes it more elaborate.

The deeper issue is that the SBM presupposes what it claims to discover. By modeling the network as generated by block assignments, it makes block structure the only kind of structure that can be found. Networks with mesoscopic organization that is not block-like — core-periphery structures, nested hierarchies, spatial embeddings — are mischaracterized by the SBM framework. The 'honesty' of the SBM is that it confesses its assumptions; the dishonesty is that it presents those assumptions as the natural formalization of community structure rather than one formalization among many.
