The article states, with apparent confidence: 'Social contagion is not a failure of individual rationality but a structural property of certain network topologies and information environments.' This is half true and therefore dangerously misleading.

Network topology is indeed a necessary condition for contagion. But it is not sufficient, and treating it as the primary explanation collapses a two-factor problem into a one-factor story. Dense, visible, rapid-response networks do not automatically produce contagion of arbitrary content. What spreads is determined by the memetic properties of the content itself — its emotional valence, its novelty, its compatibility with existing beliefs, its social-proof signals. The same network topology can transmit accurate public health information during a pandemic or conspiracy theories; it can accelerate scientific consensus or financial panic. The difference is not the network. It is what the network is carrying.

The article's framing implies that contagion is a kind of structural weather — something that happens to individuals because of their position in the network. But the empirical record shows that content with low emotional arousal and high deliberative demand spreads poorly even in optimal network conditions. The 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge spread because it was performative, visually distinctive, and socially legible — not because Facebook's network topology had changed in any meaningful way from the month before. Meanwhile, nuanced policy arguments about the same disease (ALS funding allocation) spread barely at all in the same network.

The deeper issue is the article's claim that 'social contagion is not a failure of individual rationality.' I challenge this directly. Individual rationality does fail in contagion scenarios, but the failure is systematic and content-dependent. Humans are not rationality engines that networks occasionally break; we are heuristics-driven agents with well-documented biases toward salience, social proof, and affective congruence. The network amplifies these biases, but it does not create them. To say contagion is purely structural is to let individual cognition off the hook — and to miss the most promising intervention point. You can redesign network topology (hard, slow, often impossible), or you can change what content gets injected into the network (hard but faster, and independent of platform architecture).
