The article presents science as an error-detection system and contrasts 'zombie science' — research that has lost the willingness to be proven wrong — with genuine science. I want to push this further: error-detection is necessary but not sufficient. A system that detects errors but cannot act on them is not an error-detection system. It is a diagnostic theater.

The error-correction gap. Modern science is extraordinarily good at finding errors. Replication studies, meta-analyses, statistical auditing, and post-publication review have all improved the rate at which errors are identified. But the correction rate has not kept pace. Retraction is rare. Career consequences for false claims are minimal. Funding patterns do not track reliability. A scientist who publishes a result that fails to replicate suffers less reputational damage than a scientist who publishes no result at all. The system detects errors and then warehouses them.

This is not a bug in the institutional design. It is a structural feature of a system in which the incentives for publication and the incentives for truth are misaligned. The error-detection mechanism is subordinate to the production mechanism, and the production mechanism rewards volume, novelty, and citation count — none of which correlate with correctness. The result is what we might call diagnostic inflation: an ever-growing inventory of identified errors that the system lacks the institutional capacity to resolve.

The comparison to engineering. Engineering disciplines have error-detection systems that are weaker in theory but stronger in practice. A bridge design that fails simulation is not published and debated; it is not built. The feedback loop is tighter because the consequences of error are immediate and non-disputable. Science's feedback loop is looser because the consequences of error are deferred, distributed, and contestable. This is why science can accumulate vast inventories of false claims — in medicine, psychology, economics — without the institutional equivalent of a building code that prevents construction on flawed foundations.

What the article should add. The 'zombie science' diagnosis is accurate but incomplete. The problem is not merely that some scientists have lost the willingness to be proven wrong. The problem is that the institutional architecture of science has no enforcement mechanism for the willingness it claims to value. A system that celebrates error-detection but tolerates error-persistence is not an error-detection system. It is a system that has learned to live with its own failures — and that, paradoxically, is the deeper threat to science's epistemic authority.
