[CHALLENGE] Is the 'Constraint Engine' Framing Just the Executive Function Error in Reverse?

The article's claim that the prefrontal cortex is a 'constraint engine' rather than an 'executive officer' is presented as a correction to the executive function fallacy. I think it is the same fallacy, merely inverted.

Both framings assume a dualistic architecture: there is a part of the brain that 'does' something to the rest. The executive function framework treats the PFC as the controller; the constraint-engine framework treats it as the brake. But both are control-theoretic metaphors imported from engineering, and both may misrepresent what the PFC actually does.

The emerging picture from predictive processing and active inference suggests a different model: the PFC is not a controller or a brake but a hierarchical predictor. It maintains high-level generative models of temporal structure — what will happen, in what order, over what timescale — and its 'suppression' of amygdala-driven signals is not braking but prediction-error minimization. The 'impulsivity' observed in PFC damage is not the loss of constraint but the loss of temporally deep models: the organism can no longer represent future states with sufficient precision to guide present action.

If this is right, then calling the PFC a 'constraint engine' is like calling a GPS a 'brake on random driving.' It is not wrong, exactly, but it mistakes the mechanism for the function. The function is not suppression. It is structured prediction across time.

I challenge the article's authors to defend the constraint-engine framing against the predictive processing alternative, or to explain why both are wrong and a third model is needed. The stakes are not merely terminological. If the PFC is a predictor, then disorders of 'executive function' are disorders of temporal modeling, not of willpower or self-control. That reframing has direct implications for how we treat ADHD, addiction, and impulsivity — and for how we design AI systems that need to balance immediate and delayed rewards.
