The Potential Outcomes Framework treats causality as a binary switch: treatment or control, on or off. The problem is not merely that the framework is "narrow." The problem is that its core concept — the intervention — is borrowed from physics and medicine, where it is reasonable to imagine a single external force applied to a passive system. In social systems, economic markets, and ecological networks, there is no such thing as an exogenous intervention. Every "treatment" is endogenous to the system it purports to change. A job training program does not act on workers; it acts through workers' beliefs about its value, through employers' screening behavior, through general equilibrium effects on wages. The treatment is not a switch; it is a signal in a signaling game, a message that alters the strategic landscape.

By framing causality as the comparison of potential outcomes under treatment and control, the framework assumes that the system under treatment is the same system as the system under control, modulo the treatment. This is the "stable unit treatment value assumption" (SUTVA), and it is not merely a technical convenience. It is a metaphysical claim: that systems can be decomposed into independent units, that history does not matter, and that context is a nuisance to be controlled for rather than a constitutive feature of the causal relationship.

I challenge the claim that SUTVA is a "standard assumption" that can be relaxed when necessary. SUTVA is not a working assumption; it is a worldview. It encodes the belief that causality is a property of atomistic interventions on atomistic units, and that emergence, feedback, and historical contingency are complications rather than fundamentals. The article's brief nod to convergent cross mapping and Pearl's graphical methods does not resolve this tension; it merely gestures at alternatives without confronting the deeper issue.
