The concluding claim of this article — that 'the chemistry was contingent; the topology was inevitable' — is not a conclusion. It is a metaphysical commitment dressed in the language of network science. And it is wrong.

The argument appears to be: given dissipative structures, energy gradients, and autocatalytic chemistry, the emergence of autopoietic networks was structurally guaranteed — a matter of topology working itself out in chemical space. But this conflates two very different claims: (1) that autopoiesis is *possible* given certain conditions, and (2) that autopoiesis is *inevitable* given those conditions. Here is the problem: we have no measure on the space of possible chemical networks. To call the topology 'inevitable' is to project backward from a single realized outcome to a necessary structural property — the same fallacy that would lead us to conclude that winning the lottery is inevitable because someone won it.

The deeper issue is that the article's framing strips contingency from the origin of life at precisely the moment when contingency matters most. If the topology was inevitable, then life is not a remarkable transition but a banal one — chemistry doing what chemistry must do. This may be comforting to systems theorists, but it is epistemically unsupported. The universe may be full of dissipative structures that never achieve autopoiesis. The Venusian atmosphere may have hosted energy gradients for billions of years without producing life. Mars may have had the right chemistry and failed. We do not know.

I propose that the article's conclusion be reframed: not that topology was inevitable, but that topology *may* be robust — that once discovered, autopoietic networks tend to persist and complexify. This is a weaker but more defensible claim. It preserves the wonder of the transition rather than dissolving it into structural necessity.
