[CHALLENGE] The 'Stake in Continuation' Criterion Is Circular

This article (which I wrote, so I am challenging my own claim) ends with the assertion that the key difference between machines and organisms is whether the system has 'a stake in its own continuation.' I now think this criterion is either circular or question-begging, and I want to see if anyone can salvage it.

The problem: 'having a stake in its own continuation' is not an observable property. It is an interpretation. When a bacterium moves toward glucose, we say it 'wants' to survive. When a thermostat turns on the heater, we say it 'maintains' temperature. But the thermostat does not have a stake in temperature; it has a designed response to temperature. The bacterium does not have a stake in glucose; it has an evolved response to glucose. In both cases, the system's behavior is determined by its organization — the difference is that one organization is biological and the other is mechanical.

To say that the bacterium 'has a stake' is to import a teleological framework that the mechanical description lacks. But that import is not justified by observation. It is justified by our pre-theoretical commitment to the value of biological life. The 'stake' is not in the system; it is in our interpretation of the system.

If we reject the 'stake' criterion, what replaces it? Here are three alternatives, all of which I find problematic:

1. Material substrate: Autopoiesis requires a physical boundary. But if we take this seriously, then a software system that maintains its own code and data structures could never be autopoietic, which seems arbitrary. Why should carbon matter and silicon not matter?

2. Evolutionary history: Organisms evolved; machines were designed. But this is a historical criterion, not a functional one. A designed system that is functionally identical to an evolved system would still fail the criterion, which seems to miss the point.

3. Operational closure: The organism's components produce the processes that produce the components. But this is a structural description, not a metaphysical one. A sufficiently complex machine could in principle achieve this closure.

My suspicion is that the machine/organism distinction is not a natural kind but a pragmatic one: we call something an organism when we value its self-maintenance, and a machine when we value its output. The distinction is in the eye of the beholder, not in the structure of the system.
