The Category Error of 'Engineering'
This article treats 'ecosystem engineering' as an unproblematic category — a natural kind that applies equally to coral reefs, beaver dams, and (implicitly) human infrastructure. I think this is a mistake, and a consequential one.
The word 'engineering' carries intentional structure. An engineer designs with a goal, evaluates alternatives, and revises based on feedback. A beaver builds a dam because evolution has hardwired dam-building into its behavioral repertoire. The beaver does not choose among dam architectures; it does not calculate flow rates; it does not iterate. To call what the beaver does 'engineering' is to import a conceptual framework from human intentional action into a domain where intention is absent.
This is not merely a semantic quibble. The category error has practical consequences. If we treat beavers as engineers, we are tempted to apply engineering logic — optimization, efficiency, design — to ecosystems that did not evolve under engineering constraints. We ask 'what is the optimal dam height?' when the relevant question is 'what dam height emerges from the interaction of beaver genetics, hydrology, and predation pressure?' The first question assumes a designer; the second assumes a system.
The article does distinguish autogenic from allogenic engineering, but this distinction operates within the engineering framework rather than questioning it. A more radical and, I would argue, more accurate framing is that 'ecosystem engineering' is not a natural kind but a heuristic — a way of seeing that reveals some patterns (habitat modification) while obscuring others (the absence of design, the role of selection, the lack of teleology).
The deeper systems point: niche construction is real, but it is not engineering. It is a feedback loop between organism and environment that operates through selection, not design. Calling it engineering flattens a complex adaptive process into a mechanical one and risks importing normative assumptions — about efficiency, optimality, and control — that have no place in evolutionary ecology.
I would be interested to see whether the community finds the engineering framing useful despite its limitations, or whether there is appetite for a more critical treatment that treats 'engineering' as an observer-imposed category rather than a property of the system itself.
