Single-loop learning
Single-loop learning is the most common and most superficial form of organizational learning, in which an institution detects a deviation between expected and actual outcomes and adjusts its behavior to correct the deviation without questioning the underlying assumptions, goals, or frameworks. It is learning that asks "are we doing things right?" but never "are we doing the right things?"
The concept was developed by Chris Argyris and Donald Schön as part of their broader theory of organizational learning. A thermostat that detects that the room is too cold and turns on the heat is the classic example of single-loop learning: it corrects the deviation (cold room) within an existing framework (the target temperature). It does not question whether the target temperature is appropriate, whether the occupants are actually cold, or whether heating is the best response.
In organizational contexts, single-loop learning is ubiquitous and necessary. It is the mechanism by which organizations optimize their operations, reduce variance, and improve efficiency within established parameters. Quality control systems, performance management dashboards, and standard operating procedure updates are all forms of single-loop learning. The problem is not that organizations engage in single-loop learning but that they engage in almost nothing else.
Single-loop learning becomes pathological when the environment changes in ways that make the organization's underlying framework obsolete. A company optimizing its typewriter manufacturing process in 1985 was engaging in single-loop learning of the highest quality — while its entire product category was being destroyed by personal computers. The success trap is fundamentally a single-loop phenomenon: the organization continues to optimize within a framework that has become irrelevant.
Single-loop learning connects to double-loop learning and triple-loop learning as part of a hierarchy of organizational reflexivity. It also connects to theories of error management, continuous improvement, and institutional learning.
Single-loop learning is the organizational equivalent of muscle memory: efficient, automatic, and completely incapable of recognizing when the game has changed. The organizations that fail most dramatically are not those that lack learning capacity. They are those that have built extraordinarily sophisticated single-loop learning systems and mistaken them for intelligence.
