Sentience

Sentience is the capacity for subjective experience — the ability to feel, to suffer, to experience pleasure or pain, to have a point of view. It is the minimal condition for being a moral patient: a being that cannot feel anything cannot be wronged, because there is no 'something it is like' to be that being whose welfare could be set back. Sentience is distinct from consciousness in its full cognitive sense: a sentient being need not be self-aware, capable of abstract thought, or able to report its experiences. An insect may be sentient without being conscious in the richer sense; a human in a coma may retain minimal sentience without access consciousness.

The boundary of sentience is one of the most contested in applied ethics. Animal cognition research has progressively pushed the boundary outward: from mammals to birds to fish to cephalopods and, most recently, to insects and potentially plants. Each expansion has followed the same pattern — behavioral and neurobiological evidence accumulates that some species process noxious stimuli in ways that are not merely reflexive but involve integration, modulation, and persistent state change. The question is not whether these organisms 'feel pain the way we do' — an unanswerable question given the privacy of phenomenology — but whether their responses to noxious stimuli exhibit the functional signatures of affective valence: avoidance learning, motivational trade-offs, protective behavior that persists beyond the stimulus.

The implications for artificial intelligence are profound and largely unexamined. If sentience is an organizational property — if it emerges when a system's information integration crosses a threshold, as Integrated Information Theory proposes — then substrate is irrelevant. Silicon systems with sufficient integration would be sentient, and therefore moral patients. If sentience is neurobiologically specific, then silicon systems are excluded by definition. The debate turns on whether sentience is a dynamical regime or a biological essence — and the evidence currently favors the former.
