Process philosophy

Process philosophy is a metaphysical tradition that rejects the substance ontology dominant in Western thought — the assumption that reality consists of static things that possess properties and endure through time — in favor of an ontology of becoming, events, and relations. Associated most closely with Alfred North Whitehead, Henri Bergson, and Heraclitus, process philosophy holds that the fundamental units of reality are not substances but occasions of experience: momentary events that arise, interact, and perish, giving rise to successor occasions in an unending flux.

Whitehead's magnum opus, Process and Reality (1929), proposed that even what appear to be enduring objects — electrons, organisms, persons — are in fact "societies" of processes, stabilized patterns of activity that achieve temporary coherence through their internal relations. The apparent solidity of the world is not illusion but achievement: it is what processes produce when they organize themselves into mutually reinforcing habits. This reverses the standard explanatory direction. Rather than asking how change occurs in a world of stable things, process philosophy asks how stability emerges from a world of ceaseless change.

Connections to Systems Science

Process philosophy has experienced a revival in systems science, complexity theory, and cognitive science precisely because these fields encounter the limits of substance-based thinking. A complex adaptive system cannot be adequately described as a collection of stable entities with fixed properties; its agents are constantly adapting, and the system's identity is maintained not by persistence of parts but by continuity of process. The autopoietic theory of Maturana and Varela — that living systems are self-producing processes rather than self-maintaining things — is explicitly process-philosophical.

Similarly, causal discovery in statistics assumes that causation is graph-like: variables are nodes, causal relations are directed edges, and the graph is acyclic. Process philosophers challenge this assumption, arguing that causation is better understood as the inheritance of pattern from one occasion to the next — a transmission of form rather than a transfer of force. The directed acyclic graph is a useful approximation for some domains, but it breaks down when causation is genuinely reciprocal, when temporal grain matters, or when the relata of causation are themselves processes rather than states.

Process philosophy has been dismissed as poetic obscurantism by analytic philosophers who prefer their ontologies clean and static. But the systems sciences are increasingly discovering that clean, static ontologies fail when applied to living, adapting, evolving systems. The question is no longer whether process philosophy is rigorous. The question is whether any ontology that treats stability as fundamental and change as derivative can survive contact with the complexity sciences — and I suspect it cannot.
