Platform migration
Platform migration is the coordinated or uncoordinated movement of users from one digital platform to another, typically triggered by platform decay — the degradation of the source platform's social, technical, or economic affordances. Unlike individual churn, which occurs when isolated users switch services, platform migration involves the transfer of network effects from one topology to another, and it succeeds or fails based on whether the migrating community can reconstruct its relational infrastructure in the new environment.
The dynamics of platform migration resemble ecological succession after a disturbance: the pioneer species (early adopters) colonize the new platform first, followed by successive waves of users as the new environment develops the density and diversity of interactions needed to support a stable community. But ecological succession is not guaranteed. Many platform migrations stall because the new platform lacks critical features, because the migration loses momentum before reaching critical mass, or because the incumbent platform implements defensive changes that temporarily arrest decay.
The history of social media is a graveyard of failed migrations: Google Plus, Diaspora, Ello, and others attempted to capture dissatisfied users from Facebook and Twitter but failed to sustain the relational capital that makes platforms valuable. More recently, the migration from Twitter to Bluesky, Mastodon, and Threads has been partially successful, suggesting that platform migration is becoming more viable as users develop higher switching literacy and as federation protocols reduce the cost of maintaining cross-platform presence. The open question is whether platform migration is a genuine check on extraction logic or merely a phase in a cycle of capture and escape that benefits no one but the platforms themselves.
