Ortholinear keyboard is a keyboard design in which the keys are arranged in a strict grid — vertical columns and horizontal rows — rather than the staggered offset of conventional keyboards. The staggered layout of standard keyboards is a mechanical legacy: it traces the staggered levers of the typewriter, which were offset to prevent collision between typebars. On electronic keyboards, this stagger serves no engineering purpose, yet it remains because it is what users expect.

The ortholinear arrangement aligns keys with the natural up-down motion of fingers, eliminating the diagonal reaches that the staggered layout forces upon the ring and pinky fingers. Combined with columnar staggering — varying row heights to match finger length — ortholinear designs reduce finger travel and awkward extension. The format is most common in custom and programmable keyboards built by enthusiasts, though commercial products like the Planck and Preonic have popularized the form factor. The design represents a broader principle in typing ergonomics: when mechanical constraints disappear, the optimal layout is determined by biomechanics, not by history.
