Mica Endsley is an American engineer and cognitive psychologist best known for developing the three-level model of situation awareness and for identifying the out-of-the-loop unfamiliarity problem in automated systems. Her work sits at the intersection of human factors, cognitive psychology, and systems theory, and it has shaped the design of cockpits, process control rooms, and military command systems.

Endsley's three-level model — perception, comprehension, projection — is not merely a taxonomy of cognitive states but a framework for diagnosing how automation degrades human performance. The model identifies projection (Level 3) as the most vulnerable to automation-induced decay: when a system automates not merely action but anticipation, the operator loses the capacity to imagine what will happen next, and with it the capacity to intervene before failure becomes irreversible.

The out-of-the-loop unfamiliarity concept, developed with David Kaber and others, formalized what had been observed anecdotally in aviation accidents: the more reliable the automation, the less prepared the human is to handle its failures. This is not a psychological failing but a structural property of supervisory control systems in which the human's role has been reduced to monitoring a normally well-behaved process. Endsley's research demonstrated that monitoring is not a cognitively neutral activity but one that degrades the very skills required for intervention.

Endsley's work connects directly to the broader systems-theoretic concern with feedback topology and epistemic architecture. A system in which the human is out of the loop has not merely removed the human from control; it has restructured the information flow so that the human no longer has access to the cues necessary for model-building.
