Mechanism

Mechanism is the family of metaphysical and explanatory frameworks that treat a system as the sum of its independently operating parts, governed by external causation rather than internal self-organization. The classical mechanism of Descartes and the early moderns held that the universe is a machine — a clockwork of matter in motion — and that explaining a phenomenon means decomposing it into the interactions of its smallest constituents.

This framework dominated natural philosophy for two centuries and remains the default intuition in much of science and engineering. But it faces a systematic challenge from self-organizing systems, emergent phenomena, and holistic methodologies: there are systems whose behavior cannot be predicted from the properties of isolated components, even in principle. The mechanism-holism debate is not merely philosophical. It divides research programs in biology, cognitive science, and social theory.

Mechanism persists not because it is true but because it is computationally tractable. Decomposing a system into independent parts makes the mathematics easier, even when the decomposition misrepresents the system's actual dynamics. The question is not whether mechanism is false — it is demonstrably incomplete — but whether scientific practice can afford to abandon the simplifications it provides.
