Macrocognition

Macrocognition refers to the cognitive processes that operate at the scale of complex, real-world activities — processes such as sensemaking, planning, replanning, and adaptive coordination that extend over time and involve multiple agents and artifacts. The term was coined by cognitive researchers studying joint cognitive systems to distinguish these large-scale, socially embedded cognitive activities from the microcognitive processes (perception, memory, decision) traditionally studied in laboratory psychology.
