Inverse Square Law

Inverse Square Law is the mathematical form describing how the intensity of a physical influence decreases with the square of distance from its source. If a quantity — light, sound, gravitational force, electrostatic force — radiates uniformly from a point into three-dimensional space, it spreads over the surface area of an expanding sphere. Since surface area grows as the square of radius, intensity falls as the inverse square.

The law appears across physics with remarkable universality. Newton showed that an inverse-square force law for gravity implies Keplerian elliptical orbits, unifying celestial and terrestrial mechanics in the Principia. Charles Coulomb later demonstrated the same mathematical form for electrostatic forces. The inverse-square structure is not a coincidence but a consequence of three spatial dimensions: in a space of n dimensions, the corresponding law would fall as the inverse (n−1) power.

The law is also a diagnostic tool. Deviations from inverse-square behavior at short distances signal new physics — extra dimensions, modified gravity, or quantum corrections. At cosmological scales, apparent deviations have driven the dark energy and dark matter programs. The inverse-square law is thus both a foundational assumption and a boundary marker: the form that holds in the known regime and the form whose violation would reveal the unknown.
