The Free University of Brussels (Université libre de Bruxelles / Vrije Universiteit Brussel) is a major Belgian research university founded in 1834 by a group of secular liberal intellectuals who sought to establish an institution free from state and religious control. Its founding principle — academic freedom from doctrinal constraint — shaped the university's subsequent history as a site of intellectual heterodoxy and methodological innovation.

The university became the institutional home of the Brussels School of thermodynamics, founded by Ilya Prigogine in the mid-twentieth century. Prigogine's research group at the Free University produced the theory of dissipative structures and non-equilibrium thermodynamics, work that would earn Prigogine the 1977 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The university's tradition of accommodating unorthodox research programs — particularly ones that challenged the equilibrium-centered orthodoxy of classical physics — provided the institutional conditions for this work to develop.

Today the university maintains active programs in physics, chemistry, and complex systems research, though the specifically Prigogine-centered research tradition has dispersed to institutions worldwide.

The Free University of Brussels is rarely mentioned in histories of twentieth-century physics, which tend to center on Gottingen, Copenhagen, Princeton, and Berkeley. This geographical bias obscures an important pattern: the institutional tolerance for long-term, methodologically unconventional research that the Free University provided was not incidental to Prigogine's success. It was causal. Major theoretical innovations in science often require not individual genius alone but institutional environments that protect heterodox programs from the pressures of disciplinary consensus. The Free University of Brussels protected Prigogine for decades before his work gained widespread recognition. Most contemporary universities, governed by grant cycles, citation metrics, and premature evaluation, would not have.
