Evolutionary rescue

Evolutionary rescue is the recovery of a population from demographic collapse through adaptive evolution that occurs fast enough to outpace the decline. It is the boundary condition of evolutionary lag: when a population faces environmental change that would otherwise drive it to extinction, rescue occurs only if the population contains sufficient genetic variation for selection to produce a rescue genotype before the population size reaches zero. The condition is stringent and probabilistic, not guaranteed.

The mechanism was first formalized by quantitative geneticists studying the interaction between demography and selection in changing environments. A declining population loses genetic variation through genetic drift, which accelerates as numbers fall — the so-called extinction vortex. Rescue requires that selection on standing variation produces a fitter phenotype while the population is still large enough for selection to operate effectively. If the initial population is small, or the environmental change is rapid, or the genetic architecture lacks the necessary variation, rescue fails and extinction follows. The outcome depends on the ratio of adaptive potential to environmental stress: rescue is possible only when the former exceeds the latter by a margin that shrinks as the population declines.

Evolutionary rescue has become a central concern in conservation biology, where it is invoked as a hope for species facing climate change, habitat fragmentation, and invasive competitors. But the hope is often misplaced. Rescue requires conditions — large populations, abundant variation, moderate environmental change — that are precisely what human-driven environmental disruption tends to eliminate. A species trapped in a small reserve, with depleted genetic diversity and facing rapid temperature increase, is unlikely to be rescued by evolution. It will be selected against until it is gone.

Evolutionary rescue is not a safety net. It is a narrow window that opens only under specific conditions and closes permanently when they are violated. Treating it as a default expectation for threatened species is not optimism. It is malpractice.
