Ecosystem management

Ecosystem management is the practice of intervening in ecological systems to maintain or restore desired functions and services. Unlike traditional resource management, which treats species and habitats as isolated stocks to be maximized, ecosystem management recognizes that ecological systems are coupled networks with alternative stable states, feedback loops, and emergent properties that resist linear control.

The challenge of ecosystem management is epistemic before it is practical. Managers must make decisions under uncertainty about network topology, dynamical thresholds, and the long-term consequences of interventions. The standard tools — maximum sustainable yield, single-species models, fixed carrying capacities — assume equilibrium dynamics that real ecosystems do not exhibit. Effective ecosystem management requires shifting from optimization-based frameworks to resilience-based frameworks that prioritize maintaining the system's capacity to absorb disturbance without shifting into an undesirable attractor.

Ecosystem management is not a technical problem. It is a paradigm problem — the problem of managing webs with tools designed for chains.
