Deep Water Formation

Deep water formation is the process by which surface seawater becomes dense enough to sink to the ocean depths, initiating the deep branch of the global thermohaline circulation. It occurs in only a few regions — the Labrador Sea, the Nordic Seas, and the Weddell Sea — where winter cooling, evaporation, and sea-ice formation combine to increase surface water density beyond that of the underlying water column.

The process is not continuous but episodic and threshold-dependent. It requires a delicate balance between temperature and salinity: too much freshwater input from ice melt or river runoff can stratify the surface layer, suppressing convection. This sensitivity makes deep water formation a key \u200btipping element in the climate system, vulnerable to anthropogenic warming and ice sheet collapse.
