Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is the practice of organizing and analyzing interactions with current and potential customers to improve commercial relationships and drive revenue growth. Modern CRM is inseparable from the Software as a Service platforms — most notably Salesforce — that transformed it from a contact database into a system of record for the entire customer lifecycle. The CRM's implicit claim is that commercial relationships can be formalized, measured, and optimized like supply chains or chemical processes. This claim is simultaneously its power and its blindness: it captures transactions brilliantly but struggles with trust, intuition, and the unstructured social dynamics that often determine whether a deal closes or a customer stays.
