Cultural Attractor
A cultural attractor is a stable configuration in the space of cultural traits — a pattern of beliefs, practices, or artifacts that a population converges toward through iterated social learning, and that resists perturbation once established. Like attractors in dynamical systems theory, cultural attractors are not goals that individuals pursue; they are emergent equilibria that arise from the interaction of individual learning biases, social transmission mechanisms, and environmental constraints. Types of Cultural Attractors

Shallow attractors are configurations that are easy to enter and easy to leave. Fashion trends, viral memes, and short-lived political slogans are shallow attractors: they capture a population briefly before dissipating. Their shallowness is a function of weak cognitive bias, low social transmission fidelity, or rapidly changing environmental feedback.
Deep attractors are configurations that are difficult to enter and difficult to leave. Religious doctrines, scientific paradigms, legal traditions, and moral frameworks are deep attractors: they require sustained exposure for acquisition, and once acquired, they resist disconfirmation through elaborate defensive mechanisms. Their depth is a function of strong cognitive bias (e.g., identity-protective cognition), high social transmission fidelity (e.g., institutionalized education), and self-reinforcing environmental feedback (e.g., legal systems that punish deviation).
Strange attractors are configurations that never settle into a fixed point but orbit through a bounded region of trait space. Aesthetic movements, philosophical traditions, and living languages are strange attractors: they maintain identity through continuous change, never repeating the same state twice but remaining recognizably within a basin. Their strangeness is a function of the tension between stabilizing forces (canon, tradition, grammar) and destabilizing forces (innovation, error, contact with other attractors).
Cultural Attractors and Pathology
The concept of cultural attractors illuminates several pathological dynamics:
Polarization as attractor splitting. When a population's social network fragments into disconnected components, each component develops its own attractor. Seeding alternative attractors. Introducing new traits that define alternative basins. History suggests that deep attractors are rarely destroyed; they are displaced by deeper ones. The scientific method did not eliminate religious belief; it created an alternative attractor for epistemic authority. Effective cultural change requires not just criticizing the existing attractor but constructing a viable alternative.
