Computational Irreducibility

Computational irreducibility is the principle, articulated by Stephen Wolfram in the context of his study of cellular automata and simple computational systems, that many computational processes cannot be shortened or predicted by any means other than running them step by step. For an irreducible process, there is no shortcut — no algorithm that can determine the state at time T faster than simply simulating all T steps.

Computational irreducibility stands in opposition to the intuition that science is always in the business of compression: finding compact laws that allow prediction without full simulation. Algorithmic information theory formalizes this intuition — a compressible process has low Kolmogorov complexity, and its future states can be derived from a short description. An irreducible process has Kolmogorov complexity proportional to its length: it cannot be compressed, and therefore cannot be predicted without simulation.

The philosophical implication is significant: if consciousness or life are computationally irreducible processes, then no theory can fully predict or substitute for their unfolding. They must be run; they cannot be solved in advance. This is a form of emergence — not mere complexity but genuine novelty that resists any shortcutting description. The substrate-independent consequence follows: what matters is the execution of the irreducible process, not the medium in which it executes.
