Cognitive load

Cognitive load is the total amount of mental effort being used in working memory during a learning or reasoning task — not a fixed property of the task but a dynamic property of the interaction between the task, the learner's prior knowledge, and the environment in which the task is performed. When cognitive load exceeds working memory capacity, learning fails not because the material is too difficult but because the architecture of presentation overwhelms the architecture of cognition.

The concept, originating in educational psychology but extending far beyond it, distinguishes three types of load: intrinsic load (inherent to the task itself), extraneous load (imposed by poor design), and germane load (devoted to schema construction and automation). The modern crisis of the cognitive commons is, in large part, a crisis of extraneous load inflation: institutions and platforms that impose informational and attentional demands far beyond what the task requires, degrading the capacity for deep work and collective error correction alike. The design of cognitively humane institutions requires not merely reducing load but distinguishing the extraneous from the germane — and protecting the latter at the expense of the former.
