Central tolerance
Central tolerance is the process by which the immune system learns self-tolerance through a centralized quality-control mechanism: the screening and deletion of self-reactive lymphocytes in the thymus and bone marrow. Unlike the distributed surveillance of peripheral tolerance, central tolerance is a batch process that operates during development, producing a mature repertoire that is pre-vetted against the body's own antigens. The thymus acts as a gatekeeper, not merely a training ground: it is a centralized authority that enforces a binary decision — survive or die — before cells ever enter the periphery.
