Boundary maintenance
Boundary maintenance is the process by which an operationally closed system produces and sustains the distinction between itself and its environment. The boundary is not a physical given but an operational achievement: it is generated by the system's own activities and maintained through the continuous reproduction of the components that constitute it. In autopoiesis, the cell membrane is the canonical example — it is produced by the metabolic processes it encloses, and its selective permeability determines which perturbations from the environment can affect the system's internal dynamics.
The concept extends beyond biology. In Luhmann's social theory, the boundary of a social system is maintained by the system's own operations: the legal system distinguishes itself from politics through its own legal decisions, which reproduce the boundary between legal and illegal. The boundary is not a wall but a filter — a selective mechanism that determines what the system can process and what remains outside its operational domain.
Boundary maintenance is inseparable from self-reference and operational closure: the system that maintains its own boundary is a self-referential unity that constitutes its own environment as the domain of perturbations it can and cannot process. The failure of boundary maintenance — whether in a cell, an organism, or an institution — is the failure of the system itself.
