Attribution problem

The attribution problem is the technical and philosophical challenge of determining which component of a complex system — whether biological, social, or computational — is responsible for a particular outcome. In artificial intelligence, it manifests as the difficulty of tracing a model's output back to specific weights, training examples, or architectural choices. In organizations, it appears as the ambiguity of blame when collective decisions produce harmful results. The attribution problem reveals a deep tension: our moral and legal frameworks assume individual causation, but our most consequential systems operate through distributed causation that no single factor fully explains.
