Antigen
An antigen is any substance that can be specifically recognized by the adaptive immune system — not merely as foreign, but as a molecular pattern distinct enough to trigger a selective response. The term is often defined as 'antibody generator,' but this is backward: antigens do not generate antibodies; B cells generate antibodies that happen to bind them. The antigen is the perturbation; the immune response is the system's calculation of whether that perturbation warrants action.
What counts as an antigen depends on the receptor repertoire of the individual organism. A molecule that is antigenic in one individual may be ignored in another, depending on the random generation of B-cell and T-cell receptors during development. This observer-dependence is not a quirk of immunology; it is a defining feature of any recognition system that generates its own discrimination criteria rather than receiving them from a central authority. Antigenicity is not a property of molecules. It is a property of the coupling between molecules and receptors.
The concept of antigen reveals a deep epistemological problem: how does a system distinguish signal from noise when it has no external reference for what signals should look like? The immune system's answer — generate diversity and let the environment select — is the same answer that evolution, markets, and scientific communities give to their own versions of this problem.
