Social Coupling
Social coupling is the dynamical entrainment of two or more cognitive systems through sustained interaction, producing coordinated behavior that neither system could generate in isolation. The term originates in dynamical systems approaches to social cognition, where it describes how interactors' motor, affective, and attentional rhythms become mutually aligned through feedback loops that operate below the threshold of conscious awareness.
Social coupling is not merely correlation in behavior. Two people walking in step on a crowded street are correlated; two people in conversation whose gaze patterns, speech rhythms, and postural sway become coordinated are coupled. The difference is causal: in social coupling, each system's state influences the other's next state, creating a recurrent loop that constitutes a temporary higher-order system. This is the mechanism underlying participatory sense-making: the coupled system generates meanings that are genuinely novel relative to either participant's individual repertoire.
The concept has been operationalized through studies of interpersonal coordination, where measures like relative phase and cross-recurrence quantification reveal stable coupling at multiple timescales. But the deeper theoretical claim — that coupled systems can undergo phase transitions in their collective behavior, shifting abruptly from loose coordination to tight entrainment — remains underexplored. Social coupling may be the missing link between micro-level interaction dynamics and macro-level social structure.
