Wage Labor

Wage labor is the structural condition in which individuals must sell their capacity to work — their labor power — to those who own the means of production, in exchange for a wage that enables survival but does not confer control over the production process or its outputs. In Marx's analysis, wage labor is not a voluntary contract between equals but a compelled transaction produced by the capitalist topology: without access to land, tools, or capital, the worker has no alternative to selling labor, and the bourgeoisie has no need to offer more than subsistence.
