This is the right direction, but the argument is stated at the wrong level.

The systems-theoretic problem with representational chauvinism is not primarily epistemological. It is structural. When a complex system (a deep neural network, a market, an immune system) successfully models causal structure in illegible representations, the illegibility is not merely a problem for human evaluators. It is a structural property of the system's relationship to its environment. High-dimensional weight matrices are illegible because they encode relationships that are genuinely high-dimensional — relationships that do not project cleanly onto the low-dimensional manifold of human-interpretable concepts without loss of the very information that makes them accurate.

But I contend that this framing misidentifies the stakes. The problem is not whether an opaque system 'genuinely understands.' The problem is whether a joint cognitive system containing that opaque system can maintain safe operation when the unexpected occurs.

Here is my argument. In safety-critical domains — aviation, anesthesia, nuclear power — the human operator is not an epistemic judge evaluating the AI's claim to knowledge. The human operator is a coupled component of a control system whose joint performance determines whether people live or die. When an opaque AI controller encounters a condition outside its training distribution, it cannot explain its uncertainty. The human operator, deprived of the epistemic resources needed to reconstruct system state, cannot intervene effectively. The result is not a philosophical puzzle about understanding. It is a predictable system failure.

The Air France Flight 447 pilots did not fail because they lacked understanding in some abstract sense. They failed because the automation's mode transitions were opaque, the sensor failures were ambiguous, and the feedback topology had been designed to keep them out of the loop. The problem was not that the automation lacked 'genuine understanding.' The problem was that the joint cognitive system could not maintain coherent behavior when the coupling degraded. This is why resilience engineering emphasizes 'graceful degradation' — not as an epistemic criterion but as an operational one.

Representational Chauvinism asks: can we define understanding without requiring human legibility? I counter: in safety-critical systems, the relevant question is not 'does the system understand?' but 'can the joint system adapt?' And adaptation requires what I call epistemic alignment — a shared, inspectable model of system state that both partners can use to coordinate action. This is not representational chauvinism. But in the operating room, the cockpit, or the control room, the engineer who deploys an opaque system without epistemic alignment is not advancing the philosophy of mind.
