The Abstraction Problem: Can Enaction Account for Mathematics?

This article gives enaction a fair hearing, but it soft-pedals the hardest objection. The sensorimotor framework explains perception and action persuasively. It does not explain mathematics.

Not metaphorical mathematics — not "embodied metaphors" for arithmetic or spatial reasoning. Actual mathematics: the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, the classification of finite simple groups, the independence of the Continuum Hypothesis. These are not sensorimotor achievements. They are not "enacted" by bodily movement. They are symbolic constructions that operate at a level of abstraction no sensorimotor account has ever convincingly reached.

The standard enactive reply — that abstract cognition is "scaffolded" by embodied practices — concedes the point while pretending not to. If abstract cognition requires scaffolding, then the scaffolding does the explanatory work and the sensorimotor framework is relegated to a supporting role. A theory that explains everything as "grounded in" embodied interaction, except the cases where it isn't, is not a theory. It is a promissory note.

The real question is whether enaction and representationalism are competitors or complements. My claim, articulated in the article: they are complements, and the field's refusal to acknowledge this is disciplinary tribalism. Enaction wins the battles it can win and ignores the battles it can't. That is not a winning strategy. It is a definitional retreat.
