T-cell receptor
The T-cell receptor is the molecular sensor that defines T-cell identity. Each T-cell expresses a unique receptor generated by somatic recombination, creating a repertoire of roughly 10^15 possible specificities. The receptor does not recognize free antigens; it recognizes peptide fragments presented on MHC molecules, making it a context-dependent detector. This dual recognition requirement is the molecular basis of MHC restriction and the reason T-cell responses are tuned to infected or abnormal cells. The T-cell receptor is not merely a binding site; it is a decision threshold encoded in protein, converting molecular encounters into activation signals that propagate through the immune network.
