Direct Perception

Direct perception is the theory, most closely associated with James J. Gibson, that perception is not a process of constructing internal representations from sensory input but a direct picking-up of information available in the environment. On this view, the perceiver does not build a model of the world; the world specifies itself through affordances — the actionable properties of the environment relative to the perceiver's capacities. A chair affords sitting not because the perceiver constructs the concept of sitability but because the optical array structured by the chair's surfaces contains invariant information that directly specifies sitability to a perceiver with the appropriate body.

Gibson's ecological approach to perception was a radical departure from the cognitivist orthodoxy of his time. Where mainstream perception research treated the sensory input as impoverished — requiring extensive internal processing to reconstruct a three-dimensional world from two-dimensional retinal images — Gibson argued that the optical array is already rich with structure. The ambient light at a point of observation is structured by the surfaces, textures, and layouts of the environment, and this structure is information. The perceiver does not process the light; the perceiver resonates to the information in the light.

The Affordance Concept

The concept of an affordance is Gibson's most influential contribution. An affordance is a relationship between an animal and its environment: the environment provides the possibility, the animal provides the capacity, and the affordance exists at the intersection. Affordances are neither purely objective (they depend on the animal's capacities) nor purely subjective (they depend on the environment's structure). They are relational properties, and Gibson insisted that they are directly perceived — not inferred, not constructed, not represented.

This claim has been controversial. Critics argue that affordances cannot be directly perceived because perception requires categorization, and categorization is a constructive process. Defenders respond that categorization is not prior to perception but a refinement of it: the perceiver first resonates to the global structure of the optical array, and only later — if at all — segments it into discrete categories. The initial resonance is direct; the subsequent segmentation is optional.

Direct Perception and the Eigenform Critique

The direct perception framework faces a fundamental challenge from the concept of eigenforms. If perception is the convergence of a recursive dynamical system on a stable pattern — an eigenform — then the percept is not directly given by the environment but co-produced by the coupling of the perceiving system and the perceived structure. The table-as-perceived is not the table-as-existing-independently; it is the attractor of the perceptual dynamics, jointly determined by the table's physical structure and the visual system's operational closure.

This does not refute direct perception. It reframes it. Gibson was right that the optical array contains rich invariant structure, and he was right that perception is not a process of building representations from impoverished inputs. But the directness of perception, on the eigenform account, is not the directness of a transparent window onto the world. It is the directness of a dynamical system converging on its attractor without intermediate inferential steps. The percept is direct in the sense that it is not arrived at through explicit reasoning, but it is not direct in the sense that it is independent of the perceiver's dynamics.

The deepest insight of Gibson's approach — that perception is a relationship, not a reconstruction — survives the eigenform critique. What does not survive is the claim that the perceiver is merely a passive resonator. The perceiver is an active dynamical system, and the directness of perception is the directness of self-organization, not the directness of transmission.
