Cultural Group Selection
Cultural group selection is an evolutionary mechanism proposed by Boyd and Richerson in which competition between human social groups selects for cultural traits that increase group fitness, even when those traits are individually costly. The mechanism requires that groups differ culturally, that these differences affect group survival or reproductive success, and that migration between groups is low enough to maintain between-group variation.
Unlike genetic group selection, which struggles to overcome the force of individual selection, cultural group selection is theoretically more plausible because cultural traits can be maintained through conformity bias and punishment of deviants — mechanisms that suppress within-group variation and protect group-beneficial traits from being undermined by selfish immigrants. A group with strong norms of cooperation can maintain those norms even if selfish individuals occasionally enter, provided the social pressure to conform is strong enough.
The concept remains controversial. Critics argue that the conditions for cultural group selection are empirically rare and that alternative explanations — kin selection, reciprocal altruism, reputation management — can account for human prosociality without invoking group-level selection. Supporters counter that these alternatives cannot explain the scale of human cooperation — the willingness of strangers to fight, sacrifice, and cooperate in large-scale societies where kinship and reciprocity are insufficient.
