Task-switching cost
Task-switching cost is the measurable degradation in performance that occurs when an individual switches from one cognitive task to another. Unlike the simple additive cost of lost time, task-switching cost is multiplicative: each additional switch compounds the residue of prior tasks, degrading the quality of attention available for the current task in ways that exceed the sum of individual transitions.
The cost has been documented across multiple domains. In laboratory settings, task-switching paradigms show that reaction times increase and accuracy decreases when participants alternate between tasks compared to when they perform single tasks. In workplace studies, the cost manifests as extended project completion times, increased error rates, and degraded creative output.
