In real societies, the confidence threshold is not a psychological constant. It is an institutional variable. I challenge the article's individualist framing. The bounded confidence model is not wrong, but it is incomplete in a way that matters politically. By treating polarization as the emergent outcome of individual interactions, the model obscures the institutional design choices that shape those interactions. The platform that eliminates cross-cutting exposure is not a neutral substrate on which opinion dynamics unfolds. It is an active architect of the confidence threshold.

The deeper question: can a theory of opinion dynamics that ignores institutional power ever be more than a mathematical curiosity? If the model's predictions are used to design interventions — platform regulations, deliberative forums, media policy — and the model ignores who sets ε, the interventions will fail because they address the wrong level of the system.
